Students and Schools
A note on schools
In India education is 'free' at a State school- the child needs to have their own
school equipment and a uniform
Approximate cost is 1000 Rp per child per year [ around $30]
Classes can be up to 40+ children and cover a range of grades. There is no
provision for remedial lessons so a child in the system sinks or swims-- as you can
imagine getting an education can be a struggle.
Shakti tries to support their students by preparing them as much as possible for
school before they start, and helping with homework and remedial lessons.
When a child is settled into school and they and the parents seem committed to
keeping them there and if there is sufficient funds available or a sponsor willing to
make the commitment a place in a local private school can be found for the child.
Approximate cost is 5000 Rp [ around $165] - this includes school fees, uniform, all
books and remedial lessons.
In the private school classes are 20 students and single class- there is a wider range
of subjects taught, computer skills, better English and remedial lessons if needed.
The child has a much greater chance of acquiring a good education.
and there is more to do....
In the afternoon, jobs like sorting out school enrolments can be done.
Most children’s births have not been recorded so in consultation with parents a birth
date is guessed at, Ramsingh will then head to the courthouse so the birth can be
registered and the child can then be enrolled in a school.
Networking and talking to parents encouraging others to send their children to
school, keeping an eye on the ones involved with the project that they are not in the
market begging. The local Nurse who administers Sabine to all people in the village
will talk to families she sees as candidates for the project. [The Indian Government
works very hard to reach every child to immunize them against Polio]
