About us,
Daily Routine,
Expenses.
Pushkar is a holy city in Rajasthan. Since the arrival of more and more tourists
especially foreigners some gypsy families [itinerant travellers] have settled in
Pushkar and their numbers are increasing day by day.
Lots of gypsies can be seen begging in streets of Pushkar.
Ransingh says
"Kids of these families are not going to school but involved in the
'profession' of begging.
This made us think something needs to be done about the future of those
kids.
They are also human beings.
To help these street children we started this Project."
The Project started in a tourist's hotel room about 7 years ago and has grown from
there.
Ramsingh left his job in a hospital in Delhi to become the coordinator in 2003.
Until 2006 the original supporters from Europe collected donations to support the
Project and the children continued to thrive.
They pulled out late 2006, leaving a huge gap
in support for the Project [NO Income]
Ramsingh could not bring himself to walk away, and
so has been trying to keep the project afloat.
In 2007 the Project was officially recognized
by the Government of India as a Registered
Charity.
Recognition is a formal thing to authenticate
the Project, checking the premises and checking
the accounts- it does not bring any financial help.
This means the Project can have a bank account
in it's own name and is open to Government
scrutiny at all times to see it is meeting the
goals it has set supporting children
into education.
It is a registered Charity and can issue a receipt
in its name - you can claim tax off sets with this
in some countries- eg Autralia.
The Project relies completely on the
generosity of others.

Expenses
We have about 30 students in our Project at present, aged from about 5 to 14, boys and
girls. Admittedly we have more success getting families to send their sons along but we
are working hard to get girls involved and making progress.
The money to run the Project comes from the generous donations of people all over the
world, some who have traveled to Pushkar and seen the Project, and others who have
heard stories about the Project and been inspired to help.
If you would like to make a donation to help keep the Shakti Project running, please
contact us. donation@shakti-streetkids-pushkar.org
Accounts of income and expenses are carefully kept,
a register of children participants and their school records
are also kept. You may see them if you wish.
When Ramsingh calls
homework time,
everything stops and
books are out.
Homework is taken
seriously.
[As an old Mum and
School teacher it was
magic to see that
attitude- Fiona]
Lunch
- hands washed
- sit quietly
- 2 children serve
- everyone waits patiently, you can
hear tummies rumbling
- 1 child says a prayer of thanks
- lunch is eaten with relish!
- plates washed and put away
-"thanks Ramsingh- bhai" floats on the air
[bhai means brother]
